چکیده

Introduction: Rotator cuff tear is one of the most common causes of shoulder pain and disability. It has been known that there are two groups of patients: those with symptomatic rotator cuff tears and those with asymptomatic ones. To date, the difference between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients has not been fully clarified yet. Recently, muscle activity during exercise was successfully examined by positron emission tomography (PET) using fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG). FDG was injected intravenously before exercise, and the uptake into the muscles was then assessed after exercise. The activity of any muscle in the body could be investigated without limitation as to the type of exercise. [1] The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in the muscle activities during shoulder elevation exercise using PET in patients with symptomatic and asymptomatic rotator cuff tears.

Differential patterns of muscle activation in patients with symptomatic and asymptomatic rotator cuff tears.

Patients with rotator cuff tears have varying degrees of symptom expression. Our purpose was to evaluate the differential firing patterns of the rotator cuff, deltoid, and scapular stabilizer muscle groups in normal control subjects and in patients with symptomatic and asymptomatic 2-tendon rotator cuff tears. Eighteen subjects were evaluated: six normal subjects and twelve with 2-tendon cuff t...

Commentary on an article by Nathan A . Mall , MD , et al . : ‘ ‘ Symptomatic Progression of Asymptomatic Rotator Cuff

The study by Mall et al. is an important, clinically relevant investigation that highlights the natural history of rotator cuff disease and specifically looks at the progression of asymptomatic tears and the factors associated with this progression. While rotator cuff disease is one of the most common orthopaedic conditions, little is known about its natural history. The purposes of this study ...

Sonographic Evaluation of the Shoulder Joint in Competitive Swimmers*

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the shoulders of symptomatic or asymptomatic competitive swimmers, quantifying the incidence of rotator cuff lesions in these athletes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven (eight male and three female) symptomatic and asymptomatic, competitive swimmers (master category) in the age range between 28 and 52 years, had both shoulders prospectively evaluated by ultrasonography for d...

Symptomatic progression of asymptomatic rotator cuff tears: a prospective study of clinical and sonographic variables.

BACKGROUND The purposes of this study were to identify changes in tear dimensions, shoulder function, and glenohumeral kinematics when an asymptomatic rotator cuff tear becomes painful and to identify characteristics of individuals who develop pain compared with those who remain asymptomatic. METHODS A cohort of 195 subjects with an asymptomatic rotator cuff tear was prospectively monitored f...

Effects of Rotator Cuff Pathology and Physical Therapy on In Vivo Shoulder Motion and Clinical Outcomes in Patients With a Symptomatic Full-Thickness Rotator Cuff Tear

BACKGROUND Physical therapy (PT) is often prescribed for patients with rotator cuff tears. The extent to which PT influences strength, range of motion (ROM), and patient-reported outcomes has been studied extensively, but the effect of PT on in vivo joint kinematics is not well understood. PURPOSE To assess the influence of symptomatic rotator cuff pathology and the effects of PT on shoulder ...
